 Summer Survival Kit

MeeMaw Taylor's
Summer Survival Kit

My kids frequently call,
"Hey Mom, what do we do for ... bites, insects, ticks
(you name it)?"

I decided to send them an email
of time proven home remedies,
and since I am writing them all down anyway,
I'll share them with you too.

You might even have a few of your own?

INSECT REPELLANT

The best thing I have ever tried is
Cutter (brand name) Sheets.
I just rub the sheet over exposed skin, my hair and clothing
before I go outside,
tucking the sheet into a pocket.

If I run out of Cutter,
I save dryer sheets after I have used them once or twice,
keeping them in a baggie
near my garden tools.
I tuck a sheet in each pocket and
if I am going to mowing, put one around each ankle under my socks.

Both methods are safe for children.

INSECT BITES

I'm trying the penny thing ...
(I'll have to get back to you on that one)

I have used
Benedryl (brand name) cream on the bite
(Benedryl also has a pen but I never thought it worked all that well)
and Benedryl tablets (orally) if there are LOTS of bites.
Benedryl also makes a liquid form for children.

If you get bit on your "privates",
and the itching is driving you insane,
it is safe to use Ora-jel.
The same way it deadens the pain in your mouth,
it will deaden the pain elsewhere.
Anything safe for your mouth is also safe
for other sensitive skin areas.

If you or your child are covered in bites,
bathing or showering in AVENO Soap will help.

CHIGGER BITES

The time proven cure is to cover each
Chigger Bite
with clear finger nail polish.

TICKS

My kids are deathly afraid of wood ticks.
Removing them without leaving the head behind is always the goal.
An EASY way to do that is
to generously cover the head of the wood tick (where it is attached)
with a glob of Neosporin
(Vaseline will work too, but it is not as convenient as a tube of Neosporin)
The tick won't be able to breath and will back out of the skin.
Once it has let go of the skin,
remove the tick.
Some folks like to burn the tick.
I flush ticks at our house.
Either way, rub the remaining Neosporin into the bite and affected area.
Good as new!

This works for dogs too,
but I keep my dogs Neosporin separate from
the family first aide kit.

POISON IVY

Any time we have been in the woods,
we shower as soon as we get home in
Dawn Dishwashing Liquid.
The same thing that cuts grease,
does an amazing job on the oily residue of Poison Ivy!

ANTS

Ants are a real problem this year.
An easy way to protect your house and garden area is
to spray around your pipes (under the sink)
and under the dishwasher and refrigerator (if you have a water dispenser)
once a week with
RAID House and Garden Spray
(green can)
It has a floral smell so it will be okay in the house.

In the garden, I spray it once or twice a week
after I have watered.
It won't harm plants, but it really cuts down on the ants.

It works for spiders under the eaves too.

SUNBURN

I buy the cheapest Aloe Gel I can find
and apply generously to sunburn.

It takes the burning away almost instantly.
In fact, when I burn myself on the grill or in the kitchen,
it works good for that too!

YOUR SHOPPING LIST:

Cutter Insect Repellant Sheets
(Start saving used dryer sheets)
Benedryl Cream
Benedryl non-drowsy Tablets
Ora-gel Cream
Aveno Bath Soap
Clear Finger Nail Polish
Neosporin
Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
RAID House & Garden Spray (green can)
Aloe Gel

You Should be ready for anything!

But, just in case,
Is there something you have used that worked too?
Would love to hear!

 Dieting Signs and Wonders!

Wonder if it's a sign?  I got these two emails on the same day!

6 Tips for Dining Out

You can't prepare every meal at home. Learn how to make smart, healthy choices when you're eating on the go.

Food is relatively cheap in this country, and as a result portions are often overly large, especially in fast-food restaurants. But if you're smart about what you order, you can get a healthy meal — including dessert — when eating out. Here are some guidelines:
  • Avoid fried foods. Frying adds more fat to a food than broiling, baking, or sauteing. Restaurant fryers often use hydrogenated oils, a source of harmful transfat.
  • Avoid dishes prepared with gravy and heavy sauces. Because gravy is often made with fatty pan drippings from meat, it is relatively high in saturated fat. Many sauces are made with cream, which is also high in saturated fat.
  • Ask the waiter how large the entrees are. If they're bigger than the meals you usually eat, consider ordering an appetizer instead or sharing an entree with someone else. And you don't have to eat everything on your plate. Take home your leftovers for tomorrow's lunch.
  • Find out how dishes are prepared. Ask whether a meal you're interested in is made with butter or animal fat. If it is, consider asking that the dish be prepared with olive oil instead, or that it be baked, steamed, or sautéed with less fat. Steer clear of meals that are prepared with a lot of cheese or cream.
  • Eat a light, healthy snack. Munch on a piece of fruit or some carrots before going out. That way, you won't be so ravenous when you arrive at the restaurant that you'll gorge on the bread served at the table (which will probably be white bread and, therefore, have a high glycemic load).
  • Share desserts. If you want a sweet dessert, consider sharing it with others at your table. You'll get the full taste, but just a fraction of the calories, sugar, and bad fats.
Living With Weight Issues: Everyday Tips

and then this ...

Calories That Don't Count

We have it on experience (our own and others) that the following food and situations have no calories to speak of (although the knowledgeable might describe them as unspeakable calories.)

OTHER PEOPLE'S FOOD:
A chocolate mousse that you did not order has no calories. Therefore, have your companion order dessert and you taste half of it.

INGREDIENTS IN COOKING:
Chocolate chips are fattening, about 50 calories a tablespoon. So are chocolate chip cookies! However, chocolate chips eaten while making chocolate chip cookies have no calories whatsoever. Therefore make chocolate chip cookies often but don't eat them.

FOOD ON FOOT:
All food eaten while standing has no calories. Exactly why is not clear, but the current theory relates to gravity. The calories apparently bypass the stomach flowing directly down the legs and through the soles of the feet into the floor, like electricity. Walking seems to accelerate this process, so that a frozen custard or hot dog eaten at a carnival actually has a calorie deficit.

CHILDREN'S FOOD:
Anything produced, purchased or intended for minors is calorie-free when eaten by adults. This category covers a wide range, beginning with a spoonful of baby tapioca -- consumed for demonstration purposes -- up to and including cookies baked and sent to college.

UNEVEN EDGES:
Pies and cakes should be cut neatly, in even wedges or slices. If not, the responsibility falls on the person putting them away to "straighten up the edges" by slicing away the offending irregularities, which have no calories when eaten. If pie or cake is neatly cut, but the remainder is not easily divisible into equal servings, it's also permissible to even things up ... without calorie consequence.

 Penny For Your Bee Stings

I haven't had a chance to test this one, but this is worth a try ...

This information may be something to remember, as this season will soon be here again ...

It might be wise to carry a penny in your pocket while working in the yard ... BEE STINGS!

A couple of weeks ago, I was stung by both a bee and hornet while working in the garden.

My arm swelled up, so I went to the doctor. The clinic gave me cream and an antihistamine. The next day the swelling was getting progressively worse, so I went to my regular doctor. The arm was infected and needed an antibiotic. The doctor told me,' the next time you get stung, put a penny on the bite for 15 minutes.'

That night, my niece was stung by two bees. I looked at the bite and it had already started to swell . So, I taped a penny to her arm for 15 minutes. The next morning, there was no sign of a bite. We decided that she just wasn't allergic to the sting.

Soon, I was gardening outside. I got stung again, twice by a hornet on my left hand. I thought, here I go again to the doctor for another antibiotic.

I promptly got my money out and taped two pennies to my bites, then sat and sulked for 15 minutes. The penny took the string out of the bite immediately.

In the meantime the hornets were attacking, and my friend was stung on the thumb. Again the penny treatment was used. The next morning I could only see the spot where the hornet stung me. No redness, no swelling. My friend's sting was the same; couldn't even tell where she had been stung.

She got stung again a few days later upon her back---cutting the grass! And the penny worked once again.

I wanted to share this marvelous information in case you experience the same problem.
The doctor said that the copper in the penny counteracts the bite. It definitely works!

Please remember and pass this information on to your friends, children, grandchildren, etc.

 Strawberry Moon and Lightning Bugs

I wish you could have been here the past few nights!
The moon was bright.
The shadows in the woods were magical.
Between the stars above
and
the lightning bugs below ...
We had quite a show!

I got up early this morning
to make a list and preparations
for a trip to the
farmer's market.
What a wonderful day it will be,
shopping for
country fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies
in the cool, cool, cool
of the morning ...

I just LOVE Summer, don't you?
