When a headline says:
Chinese Lead In Medals
it is very hard to know if they mean LEAD or LEAD ...
Lead : to direct the operations, activity, or performance of <lead an orchestra> (2) : to have charge of <lead a campaign> (3) : to suggest to (a witness) the answer desired by asking leading questions b (1) : to go at the head of <lead a parade> (2) : to be first in or among <lead the league> (3) : to have a margin over <led his opponent>
or
Lead : a heavy soft malleable ductile plastic but inelastic bluish white metallic element found mostly in combination and used especially in pipes, cable sheaths, batteries, solder, and shields against radioactivity
... although stories that reported lead alloy in medals were satire (humor), they did cause one to pause ...

Beijing enhanced Olympics show with faked 'fireworks'
BEIJING, China (AP) -- Not all was what it seemed during the spectacular opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
Beijing Olympic organizers say their opening-ceremony fireworks were enhanced by prerecorded footage. Beijing organizers confirmed Tuesday that some of the fireworks display featured prerecorded footage.
Fireworks that burst into the shape of 29 gigantic footprints were shown trudging above the Beijing skyline to the National Stadium near the start of the ceremony.
Though the footprint-shaped fireworks were real, some of the footage shown to television viewers around the world and on giant screens inside the "Bird's Nest" stadium featured a computer-generated three-dimensional image.
"It was confirmed that previously recorded footage was provided to the broadcasters for convenience and theatrical effects -- as in many other big events," Beijing organizing committee spokesman Wang Wei said. "On the day of the ceremony there were actual footprints of fireworks from the south to the north of the city.
"However, because of the poor visibility of the night, some previously recorded footage may have been used."
The computerized images were produced by Crystal Digital Technology Co. of Beijing. "We did our best to create a rendering that would look like the shot was taken live," company spokesman Lei Ming told the Beijing Times. "Most people could not tell the difference."
NBC said broadcasters Bob Costas and Matt Lauer told viewers the display was cinematic. "This is actually almost animation," Lauer said on the air.
The ceremony won rave reviews around the world and was watched by more than 1 billion people.

International Olympic Committee Promises to Investigate Chinese Gymnast's Age
Posted Aug 21st 2008 6:59PM by Michael David Smith
The Chinese gymnast He Kexin, who won the gold medal in the uneven bars and won another gold for China in the team competition, has long been the subject of scrutiny surrounding her age.
News organizations have reported that she's 14 -- which would make her two years too young to compete under Olympic rules -- and the eyeball test tells us that she doesn't look 16, which is how old the Chinese government claims she is.
Now the International Olympic Committee says it's going to investigate. The Times of London reports:
The investigation was triggered as a US computer expert claimed today to have uncovered Chinese government documents that he says prove she is only 14 - making her ineligible to compete in the Olympics - rather than 16, as officials in Beijing insist is her age.
Mike Walker, a computer security expert, told The Times how he tracked down two documents that he says had been removed from a Chinese government website. The documents, he said, stated that He's birth date was January 1, 1994 - making her 14 - and not January 1 1992, which is printed in her passport. The International Olympic Committee has taken a "see no evil, hear no evil" approach to China during the Games, but it's long past time for this investigation to commence. The evidence appears strong that He is too young to compete. That means she should be disqualified, and the silver medalists (the Americans in the team competition and Nastia Liukin in the uneven bars) deserve the gold.

Jo 2008 : The rumours of He Kexin and Jiang Yuyuan’s age-falsification 27 07 2008
China named its Olympic women’s gymnastics team on Friday, and the inclusion of at least two athletes has further raised questions, widespread in the sport, about whether the host nation for the Beijing Games is using under-age competitors.
Chinese officials responded immediately, providing The New York Times with copies of passports indicating that both athletes in question — He Kexin, a gold-medal favorite in the uneven parallel bars, and Jiang Yuyuan — are 16, the minimum age for Olympic eligibility since 1997.
Officials with the International Gymnastics Federation said that questions about He’s age had been raised by Chinese news media reports, USA Gymnastics and fans of the sport, but that Chinese authorities presented passport information to show that He is 16.
Online records listing Chinese gymnasts and their ages that were posted on official Web sites in China, along with ages given in the official Chinese news media, however, seem to contradict the passport information, indicating that He and Jiang may be as young as 14 — two years below the Olympic limit.
Mary Lou Retton, the Olympic all-around gymnastics champion at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, recently watched a competition video of He and other Chinese gymnasts on the uneven bars. “The girls are so little, so young,” Retton said. Speaking of He, Retton rolled her eyes and laughed, saying, “They said she was 16, but I don’t know.”
An advantage for younger gymnasts is that they are lighter and, often, more fearless when they perform difficult maneuvers, said Nellie Kim, a five-time Olympic gold medalist for the former Soviet Union who is now the president of the women’s technical committee for the Swiss-based International Gymnastics Federation. “It’s easier to do tricks,” Kim said. “And psychologically, I think they worry less.”
The women’s gymnastics competition at the Beijing Games, which begin Aug. 8, is expected to be a dramatic battle for the team gold medal between the United States and China. At the 2007 world championships, the Americans prevailed by 95-hundredths of a point.
On the uneven bars, He and Nastia Liukin of the United States are expected to challenge for the individual gold medal.
In Chinese newspaper profiles this year, He was listed as 14, too young for the Beijing Games.
The Times found two online records of official registration lists of Chinese gymnasts that list He’s birthday as Jan. 1, 1994, which would make her 14. A 2007 national registry of Chinese gymnasts — now blocked in China but viewable through Google cache — shows He’s age as “1994.1.1.”
Another registration list that is unblocked, dated Jan. 27, 2006, and regarding an “intercity” competition in Chengdu, China, also lists He’s birthday as Jan. 1, 1994. That date differs by two years from the birth date of Jan. 1, 1992, listed on He’s passport, which was issued Feb. 14, 2008.
There has been considerable talk about the ages of Chinese gymnasts on Web sites devoted to the sport. And there has been frequent editing of He’s Wikipedia entry, although it could not be determined by whom. One paragraph that discusses the controversy of her age kept disappearing and reappearing on He’s entry. As of Friday, a different version of the paragraph had been restored to the page.
The other gymnast, Jiang, is listed on her passport — issued March 2, 2006 — as having been born on Nov. 1, 1991, which would make her 16 and thus eligible to compete at the Beijing Games.
A different birth date, indicating Jiang is not yet 15, appears on a list of junior competitors from the Zhejiang Province sports administration. The list of athletes includes national identification card numbers into which birth dates are embedded. Jiang’s national card number as it appears on this list shows her birth date as Oct. 1, 1993, which indicates that she will turn 15 in the fall, and would thus be ineligible to compete in the Beijing Games.
Zhang Hongliang, an official with the Chinese gymnastics federation, said Friday that perhaps Chinese reporters and provincial sports authorities made mistakes in listing He’s and Jiang’s birth dates differently from the dates given on their passports.
“The two athletes have attended international sports competitions before, and I’m sure the information is correct,” Zhang said of the athletes’ passports.

My suspicions were confirmed today when I looked out in the rain and saw Mama Deer and her twins eating my flowers.

I was happy to see the deer ...

delighted to see the fawns on this rainy day ...

but really wished they wouldn't graze in the garden ...

even if the lillies are done blooming this year ...

I'm grinding up Irish Spring to protect next years plants ...
Deer or flowers? Why can't we have BOTH?
loved this comment from stargazegurl : A russian couple are walking down the streets of Lenningrad when it begins to drizzle. The husband says to the wife, "Look, honey, it's snowing!" The wife argues, "No, no, it's just rain!" They argue about the weather for several minutes, and as they approach one of the Russian guardsmen their argument is becoming heated. The husband notices the guard, dressed in his red Russian Guard uniform and tells his wife they should let the guard tell them if it is rain or snow, and then let the argument be done with his answer. So they approach him. The husband says, "Hail Guardsman Rudolf, my wife and I are arguing and we can't come to an agreement. Would you be so kind as to settle it for us? You see, she thinks it's raining and I think it's snowing. So which is it?!" Rudolf answers, "Why, it's just a bit of rain is all." As they walk away the husband begins to comment that he still thinks it's snowing. The wife quiets him by pointing out: "Rudolf the red knows rain, dear."
Good one, Star!!!

Casting Love Into The Stream

Last Summer ... Captain Morgan lifted our Spirits by doing a post about some of the bloggers he was thankful for. I liked the idea so much, I invited others to
Casting Love Into The Stream
Why not ... Pick Three Bloggers !!!
Tell an old friend how much their friendship has meant to you. Tell a new friend how glad you are to have found them. OR Welcome A New Blogger To The Stream. Tell them something you like about them.
Tell Someone You Appreciate Them !!!
C'mon! Play! It will be fun!

Casting Love Challenge !!!
Pick three (or more) bloggers, say something you like about them, and I will add your comment and a link to their blog. I wonder how many we can fit into one post???

Simple Question: Why? Simple Answer: Real love grows and grows and grows ... It brings LIGHT to the darkest day. It fills our space with creative energy! It can make a difference when nothing else does.
How much difference? Well, that's up to you!
This is a copy of last year's post:
I am reprinting Captain Morgan's post here with his permission. Someone new to Blogstream asked what Blogstream was all about.
This is what Blogstream is all about ...

I came to the Stream to write. When I first set sail here I had no idea I'd soon find a virtual family, a communal confluence of hearts and minds, an enclave if you will. A place where I could share the magic of the Hitchcock Railway, reminisce about years spent working on the road, explore new horizons and let the words just spill out’ve my head. There’s been some adversity along the way, but it always seems to subside soon enough. Maybe not as soon as it should, but eventually the Stream flows on and washes the negativity away. The purpose of my post isn't to dwell on the unpleasant moments. It’s time to celebrate all the good people I've met here on the Stream ... so ... here goes in no particular order. I'm sure you've discovered just how random Captain Morgan can be. Pull up a chair and make yourselves comfortable on Captain Morgan’s back porch. There’s room enough for all of you!

First things first. None of this would've happened without love and encouragement from my soul mate, lover and best friend, Mrs Morgan ( His Queen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! by HisQueen ) When Chey’s wrestling career was flying high it was I who was the wind beneath her wings. When I decided to begin writing again, it was she who was the wind beneath my wings. My book would have never been published without her and I'd have left my writing behind.

Living and Dying in 5/4 Time by Captain Morgan

As I read Captain Morgan's list, I realized there were others I would mention too, and it occurred to me that others might feel the same way too!
So how about if we each add three more bloggers (not already on the list) and a short description of why we chose them?
C'mon ... Let's Cast Our LOVE Into The Stream !!!
Just leave them in the comment section and I'll copy and paste them here with a link to their blog. It will be easy!
These are some we added ...

His Queen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! by HisQueen and Living and Dying in 5/4 Time by Captain Morgan It just doesn't seem right not to return the kindness they expressed in this writing or the kindness that they both have shown me. The way that Chey and I became "sisters by 1/2 second" was actually after a series of those wonderful, silly little tests. Every time she and I took a test, we joked at how close our answers and scores always were. One of us said "we could be sisters" and the other said "we could be twins" and thus, a sisterhood was born. I love Chey and her hubby too! Cappy is a true story teller, weaving through plots and introducing us all to the most fascinating people on The Hitchcock Railway and beyond. As much as I like his fiction stories, I really love when he talks about their REAL stories, Chey's pro wrestling days, his musician days, and their falling in love ... chokes me up every time.

A Jesus' Alien on Earth by Praywithhope and radicaldiscipleship by AZRON Talking about love stories made June and Ron come to mind next. I met June first. She is always so positive and leaves such kind and encouraging comments. I accidentally ran into Ron somewhere and he mentioned his wife, June?!!! I asked him if he was married to "our June"? He of course was! I said then and I still say now that it is really inspiring to meet a marriage made up of TWO REALLY GREAT people. It makes me want to celebrate their marriage with them!

Looking for Truth by Lookin' Have you ever had a friend that just made you smile every time you see her? Lookin is one of those friends. I like her spunk. I like the way she talks (writes). She is my heart to heart friend.

Someone will always be prettier.
Someone will always be smarter.
Someone will have a better career. Someone's houses will always be bigger.
Someone will drive a better car.

Her husband might fix more things around the house or spend more time with his family. His wife might be a better household manager, decorator or cook.
Their children might do better in school.

Just let those things go.
In 100 years, none of that will matter So does it really matter now? Love YOU and your circumstances.
Think about it!

The handsomest man in the world might have hell in his heart.
The most highly favored woman on your job
might not be able to have children.
The richest person you know with all those beautiful things might be the loneliest.
The jerk who cut you off in traffic last night, might be a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry just so she can spend a few precious moments with her children.

The pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly, might be a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loan.

The scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) might be a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.
The old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress, might be savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

If we don't have LOVE, we don't have anything.
Love who YOU are! Count your blessings.
Look in the mirror in the morning, smile and say,
"I am too blessed to be stressed!"
Of all the gifts God gave us, the greatest gift is love. We can open our hearts to patience, empathy and mercy. It's so easy to judge people by what we see, but what if we knew their whole story? Everybody is struggling with something.

To the world you might be just one person,
but to that one person you meet today that was hoping for "a sign", your smile, your kind word, your consideration
will mean the world.
