My name is Grace and in the autumn of 1999 I packed up everything I could fit into my car and left Colorado without looking back. My best friend, Robin, had been killed in a car accident a year before and I was slowly losing my mind.
An accomplished caterer who had a pretty good life, I decided to move to Napa Valley and make the switch to all things Wine.
I realized life was to short to continue on in a mundane existence. Although I only worked forty weeks out of the year and spent the rest of my time abroad I found my world to be very empty and shallow.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I was engaged, married and divorced all within the one year anniversary of Robin's death.  Believe me that's another story entirely.
Come with me to California where the party of the century is about to begin.
Where giants live and the dreams you dream can come true if you work hard and believe in yourself ...

I spent some time buying new children's books for the store yesterday. I'm really picky about children's books, because we can't devote much space to them. I love buying and reading kid's books, so it's always a challenge. I buy the Caldecott and Newbery and Parent's Choice award winners first ... I also like to pick new children's books that are so outrageously funny and clever that they make me laugh.

1 Graham Cracker Pie Crust
1 Can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk
1 Tub of Cool Whip (don't know exactly what size but it is the smaller one)
1 package of Kool Aid-Kiwi-Watermelon flavor
(or any other flavor you would like to try...but my family is partial to this flavor)

In a large bowl, empty the Cool Whip, add condensed milk then using a hand mixer, mix until blended. Add package of Kool Aid, mix again. Pour in the crust. Put in the fridge. Doesn't take long at all to set and it is....YUMMY!
Lemonade is also good....Cherry....Strawberry.....

I have been ORDERED by my daughter NOT to make anymore of these pies for Super Trooper as his bullet proof vest is getting smaller and smaller.

We're about to enter the peak of the hurricane season, any day now, you're going to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to some radar blob out in the Gulf of Mexico and making two basic meteorological points:

   1.  There is no need to panic.
   2.  We could all be killed.

Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in Louisiana.  If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one."
Based on our experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1:  Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days.
STEP 2:  Put these supplies into your car.
STEP 3:  Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween.

Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan.  Most people will foolishly stay here in Louisiana.

CALL A WRONG NUMBER ...

T-Bird picked up the phone when it rang last night. He talked to the caller for about five minutes and just busted out laughin'.
It was a buddy from the airport. This buddy has a daughter who is dating a man with the same first name as my husband. Both men are listed by just their first name on his cell phone.
He thought he had called his daughter's boyfriend, so he was really confused by the wife that answered the phone, since the boyfriend was supposed to be divorced. When he told HIS wife about the other wife on the phone she was confused as well, and they started to wonder about their daughter's boyfriend. And they didn't know what they should do. Do they tell their daughter that her boyfriend is a two-faced jerk, or let her find out on her own? Do they confront him? Do they do some snooping?
Thankfully, they just kept quiet and then discovered that there were TWO men with that same first name on the cell phone. So the buddy called back and tested the waters to see just which man he had called in the first place. All is well again!

 Healthy Choices Mean Taking Care Of YOU
 

 
 
Sometimes, it's good to review what medicines and vitamins we are taking ... boring topic ... but necessary.  We have to take care of our bodies if we want to live healthy lives.  Of course, we may have inherited weaknesses, but eating healthy, exercising, drinking plenty of water and taking vitamins will help us make the most of the good health we already have.

Our physical health can effect our emotional and mental well-being too.  If we are depressed and can find the motivation to exercise (which will release endorphins - nature's pain killer), eat healthy foods to build our strength and drink lots of water to flush out toxins caused by stress, we will find ourselves in a better frame of mind.

Of course, it all works together!  This morning, I read this from the Daily OM about making healthy choices.  I had planned to post the vitamin breakdown, as notes to myself and anyone else who might be interested, but decided to add the Daily OM article because even though I have the best intentions, I sometimes have to be reminded that the BEST vitamins in the world won't do me any good at all unless I take them!

Parts That Don't Want To Heal
 

In almost every case, we know what is best for us in our lives, from the relationships we create to the food we eat. Still, somewhat mysteriously, it is often difficult to make the right choices for ourselves. We find ourselves hanging out with someone who leaves us feeling drained or choosing to eat fast food over a salad. We go through phases where we stop doing yoga or taking vitamins, even though we feel so much better when we do. Often we have no idea why we continue to make the less enlightened choice, but it is important that we inquire into ourselves to find out.

When we choose that which is not best for us, the truth can be that there is a deep seated part of us that does not want to heal. We may say it’s because we don't have the time or the energy or the resources, but the real truth is that when we don't take care of ourselves we are falling prey to self-sabotage. Self-sabotage happens unconsciously, which is why it’s so difficult to see that we are doing it. The important thing to realize is that this very part of us that resists our healing is the part that most needs our attention and love. Even as it appears to be working against us, if we can simply bring it into the light of our consciousness, it can become our greatest ally. It carries the information we need to move to the next level in our healing process.

When we recognize that we are not making healthy choices, we might even say out loud, “I am not taking care of myself.” Sometimes this is the jolt we need to wake up to what is actually happening. Next we can sit ourselves down in meditation, with a journal, or with a trusted friend to explore the matter more thoroughly. Just shining the light of our awareness on the source of our resistance is sometimes enough to dispel its power. At other times, further effort is required. Either way, we need not fear these parts that do not want to heal. We only need to take them under our wing and bring them with us into the light.

I think I have been hearing ... Don't forget to drink your water (8 glasses a day) and take your vitamins most of my life.  I used to laugh at the idea that we need anything other than to eat healthy ... Yeah, right!  How many of us eat healthy all the time? 

It turns out Mom was right ... Was there ever any doubt?!!!  Taking vitamins on a regular basis actually keeps us young longer.  It is preventative maintenance, like changing the oil regularly in your car!

Here is an overview of the vitamins we should be taking and what they actually do for us:



Vitamin Overview

All natural vitamins are organic food substances found only in living things, that is, plants and animals. With few exceptions, the body cannot manufacture or synthesize vitamins. They must be supplied by the diet or in dietary supplements. Vitamins are essential to the normal functioning of our bodies. IMPORTANCE: May reduce the risk of a heart attack by lowering homocysteine levels. In recent years, high levels of homocysteine have been found to be associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries due to the accumulation of fatty plaques). Protects against birth defects by helping regulate embryonic and fetal nerve cell formation; protects against intestinal parasites and food poisoning; may delay graying hair when used in conjunction with pantothenic acid and PABA; promotes healthier looking skin, is considered a brain food; is needed for energy production, and the formation of red blood cells; strengthens the immune system by aiding the proper formation and functioning of white blood cells; important for healthy cell division and replication.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May result in gastrointestinal disorders, anemia, Vitamin B-12 deficiency, pre-mature gray hair. See References


INOSITOL

IMPORTANCE: Is vital for hair growth; promotes strong healthy hair, and aids in preventing fallout; high levels of this nutrient is found in the heart and brain; creates a calming effect and reduces blood cholesterol; prevents hardening of the arteries, and is important in the formation of lecithin and the metabolism of fat and cholesterol; removes fat from the liver; aids in redistribution of body fat; helps prevent eczema; has been used for depression, panic attacks and diabetes.

PABA (Para Amino Benzoic Acid)

IMPORTANCE: An anti-oxidant which helps in the formation of red blood cells; aids in the maintenance of healthy intestinal flora; acts as a coenzyme in the breakdown and utilization of protein; may restore gray hair to its original color if the graying was caused by stress or a nutritional deficiency; protects against second hand smoke, ozone, and other air pollutants; reduces inflammation caused by arthritis; improves flexibility; helps keep skin smooth; has been used to prevent and reverse accumulation of abnormal fibrous tissue, as occurs in various connective tissue diseases.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May cause extreme fatigue, eczema, irritability, depressions, nervousness, constipation, headaches, digestive disorders, hair turning prematurely gray. See References


VITAMIN C (Ascorbic Acid)

IMPORTANCE: A major and very potent anti-oxidant; plays a primary role in the formation of collagen, which is important for the growth and repair of body tissue cells, gums, blood vessels, bones and teeth; protects against the harmful effects of pollution; protects against infection, and enhances the immune system; helps protect against many forms of cancer by counteracting the formation of nitrosamines (cancer-causing substances); protects against abnormal blood clotting and bruising, and may reduce the risk of cataracts; aids in the treatment and prevention of the common cold; prevents scurvy; reduces the effects of many allergy producing substances; helps lower blood pressure; is vital for wound healing; strengthens the blood vessels; reduces cholesterol and protects against heart disease; aids in the production of "anti-stress" hormones; is needed for healthy adrenal function; helps expel heavy metals and other toxic substances from the body.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May lead to soft & bleeding gums, swollen or painful joints, slow-healing wounds & fractures, bruising, nosebleeds, tooth decay, loss of appetite, muscular weakness, skin hemorrhages, capillary weakness, anemia, impaired digestion. See References.


BIOFLAVONOIDS - HESPERIDIN - RUTIN

Is essential for the proper absorption and use of Vitamin C; promotes vascular health; protects and preserves the structure of capillaries, which will help prevent bruising, varicose veins and hemorrhoids; helps prevent blood clotting and platelet clumping by making the blood less sticky; lowers cholesterol levels; treats and prevents cataracts, glaucoma, and other vision problems; when taken with Vitamin C may reduce the symptoms of oral herpes.   See References.


QUERCETIN

A very potent bioflavonoid found in red wine, green tea, tomatoes, onions, and green beans. A natural anti-oxidant, which protects cells in the body from damage by "free radicals". Heart disease and high cholesterol is partially caused by free radical damage to blood vessels. May protect against heart attacks and strokes; recommended as a treatment for allergies, hay fever, and asthma because it helps prevent immune cells from releasing histamine, the chemical that initiates the itching, sneezing, and swelling of an allergic reaction; helps prevent itchy eyes, runny noses, and scratchy throats; in animal studies has shown to protect against a variety of cancers; may help stop cancer at its earliest stage by preventing the damaging changes in the cells that initiate cancer.   See References.


VITAMIN D

IMPORTANCE: A deficiency plays a key role in the development of type 1 diabetes. Vitamin D is needed for islet cells to produce insulin, the hormone that allows cells to take up blood sugar. Without enough Vitamin D, islet cells don't produce insulin. Helps regulate white blood cells that make up the immune system; Vitamin D with calcium has shown to reduce osteoporosis and hip fractures; improves the absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus; hardens and repairs bones; prevents rickets, treats hypocalcaemia, and promotes normal growth in children; supports the healthy function of the thyroid gland; may help prevent colon cancer.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May lead to rickets, tooth decay, softening of bones, improper healing of fractures, lack of vigor, muscular weakness, inadequate absorption of calcium, retention of phosphorous in the kidneys. See References.


VITAMIN E

IMPORTANCE: Is a "super" anti-oxidant, which protects cells against damage caused by "free radicals". Is extremely important in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease, and is useful in treating premenstrual syndrome and fibrocystic disease of the breast. Thus far, studies have shown, that Vitamin E protects against approximately eighty diseases. It prevents thick scar formation when applied topically, and accelerates the healing of burns. It reduces blood pressure, aids in preventing cataracts, relieves leg cramps, and enhances sperm production; promotes healthy skin and hair and prevents age spots; retards cellular aging due to oxidation; prevents and dissolves blood clots; slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease; significantly strengthens the immune system; supplies oxygen to the blood which is then carried to the heart and other organs thus alleviating fatigue; treats circulatory problems and prevents lung toxicity from air pollution; enhances sexual performance; improves muscle strength and stamina. Studies have shown that low levels of Vitamin E in the blood increases the risk of certain types of cancer, particularly cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, breast, prostate, lung, and colon. Studies have shown that Vitamin E improves insulin action and it exerts a number of beneficial effects that aids in preventing long-term complications of diabetes, especially cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that those who took Vitamin E on a regular basis had a 41 % lower risk of heart disease. Other studies have shown that people with existing heart disease, who started taking 400-800 IU of Vitamin E daily, had a 70% reduction in the number of heart attacks as compared to a placebo group.

Note: There are three forms of Vitamin E on the market: (1) 100% Synthetic (2) Blended (contains 95% Synthetic and 5% Natural) (3) 100% Natural. Synthetic E is much less effective (only 5 to 20% as much biological activity) as the 100% Natural form. Synthetic Vitamin E is usually made from petroleum, turpentine, sugar, and artificial preservatives. According to the New York Academy of Sciences, synthetic Vitamin E has been shown to block the absorption of natural Vitamin E from food. The FDA allows the blended form of Vitamin E to be labeled as "Natural E" even though it only contains 5% natural products. As a result, consumers are mislead into thinking it is a 100% Natural E, when it is not! It's 95% synthetic. The 100% Natural form of Vitamin E is derived from soybeans and contains 5 times more biological activity than the synthetic form.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May lead to a rupture of red blood cells, loss of reproductive powers, lack of sexual vitality, abnormal fat deposits in muscles, degenerative changes in the changes in the heart and other muscles; dry skin.  See References.



CAUTION:  YOU CAN TAKE TOO MANY VITAMINS
Too much of a good thing can have unexpected consequences. Just ask people who have gulped gallons of carrot juice, which is rich in beta carotene, only to find that the palms of their hands and the soles of their feet turned a dull yellowy orange.  The carrot-juice syndrome is generally thought to be harmless and reversible, but overdosing on some other vitamins and minerals can have serious side effects:
Vitamin A
Gorging on this vitamin compound in doses of more than 25,000 IUs (five times the RDA) can lead to liver damage, hair loss, blurred vision and headaches.
Vitamin B-6
Ingesting more than 400 mg a day (200 times the RDA) can cause numbness in the mouth and hands and difficulty in walking.
Vitamin C
It was once believed to cause kidney stones, but experts now say there is no solid evidence of dangerous side effects from vitamin C. High doses can produce stomachaches and diarrhea.
Vitamin D
In daily doses of 50,000 IUs (125 times the U.S. RDA), the sunshine vitamin can cause the buildup of calcium deposits that can interfere with the functioning of muscles, including heart tissue. While sunbathing will never create an overdose, taking too many supplements can.
Niacin
Doctors prescribe doses of 2,000 mg (100 times the RDA) to help lower cholesterol. But patients who take that much should be monitored for possible symptoms of jaundice and liver damage.
Iron
Those who want to bolster their red blood cell count, especially elderly people and menstruating women, have been taking iron supplements for years. Daily doses higher than 100 mg (six times the RDA) could interfere with absorption of zinc, a mineral that speeds wound healing and helps regulate the immune system.

Niacin flush (Vitamin B3) is uncomfortable, but lasts only 2 to 8 hours. Vitamins A and D may cause symptoms when large doses are taken each day, but a single dose of these vitamins are rarely toxic. B vitamins usually do not cause symptoms.  If medical treatment is quickly received, patients who have iron and calcium overdoses usually recover.
